Sir Isaac Newton was a mathematician and scientist, and he was the first person who is credited with developing calculus. Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz independently developed the theory of infinitesimal calculus in the later 17th century. Who is the true father of calculus?Ĭalculus, known in its early history as infinitesimal calculus, is a mathematical discipline focused on limits, continuity, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. He also discovered notions such as higher derivatives, and analysed the product and chain rules in depth. He was primarily focused on bringing calculus into one system and inventing notation that would unambiguously define calculus. Archimedes used what eventually came to be known as the method of indivisibles in his work The Method of Mechanical Theorems to find areas of regions and volumes of solids. The concept of infinitesimals was originally introduced around 1670 by either Nicolaus Mercator or Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Did Leibniz ever meet Newton?Īlthough he did not meet Newton, Leibniz learned of a certain John Collins, a book publisher, and someone who had maintained a sporadic correspondence with Newton.
